BRanCHes
BRanCHes As the Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme Energy Savers we are part of a Steering Group with the Green Communities Energy Savings Trust (Rebecca Frost) and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (Clare Redfern), to promote and encourage energy saving through loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, water conservation etc. to move towards being a Low Carbon Community.

We invite you to a Sustainable Transport Event on Saturday 26th June from 10am to 1pm.  Come and join us for free coffee and biscuits and find out how you can travel in a more sustainable way.

We are planning to have 'hands on' exhibits. For example you can try

  • The Energy Saving Trust's Driving Simulator for smarter driving
  • SMBC's cycling simulator

The Community Police will be available to give advice on cycle security and will offer Postcode Stamping.

Information about

  • Trains
  • Buses
  • Airport and aircraft
  • "Bikeright"
  • Cycle routes

We plan to run a survey to test possible demand for

  • Car sharing
  • Secure Cycle Parking at the railway station.

This event is being organised by the Energy Saving Trust in Partnership with the Bramhall & Cheadle Hulme Energy Savers (BRanCHes) and is fully supported by SMBC for all residents of Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme.

Over 50% of the UK's climate changing carbon dioxide emissions come from our homes and transport choices. Many communities want to act to reduce their carbon emissions. The Energy Saving Trust advice centre for Greater Manchester (GM ESTAC) Low Carbon Communities programme aims to support communities to become as low carbon as possible.

The GM ESTAC process is to select a geographical community (for example a ward, a village or perhaps part of a small town) or specific community interst group (for example a faith group, a school, or a Women's Institute) interested and able to engage with others in their wider community.  The GM ESTAC will work with the community group to develop a programme of suitable activities to help the chosen communities use energy more efficiently, generate their own energy from renewable sources where appropriate and reduce carbon emissions.

The package offered by the Energy Saving Trust is a two year programme, the first year aimed at tackling insulation and home energy saving measures, with the second year being more about what the local community wants to achieve in order to reduce their carbon emissions.

Year One

Two areas have been selected in Stockport, one in Cheadle Hulme and one in Bramhall, detailes of these are in the BRanCHes website www.stockport.gov.uk/branches.

The Steering Group is working in both areas to arrange events, collect data and promote insulation schemes and programs of work.

We have selected 435 houses on the Meadway Estate in Bramhall and 435 houses from the Ramilies Estate in Cheadle Hulme. We have sent a personalised letter to the householders inviting them to take up offers of energy saving opportunties.

In the letter we invite the householder to attend a drop in event which is an exhibition of stalls, with the save energy theme.  We are publicising the event widely to get as much uptake as possible. Included amongst the stands will be United Utilities for Water Conservation and Dysons Insultations who are doing attractive deals on loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.  The Energy Saving Trust, Greater Manchester Recycling, Fairtrade and others will be present.

A very important stand is the Consultation Stand where people are invited to express their opinions on what the Steering Group should tackle as a community project i.e. a neighbourhood project for Year Two.This is a data gathering stand to seek opinions from local people who will be asked to record any negative issues about their area, and improvements they'd like to see makde. Also they will be asked to record any positives and good practices.  Opinions will be sought on the most effective ways to reduce emissions of CO2 in the area.

Views on the following may be asked:

  • What would make you reduce your CO2 consumption?
  • Would you take up a discounted insulation scheme offer?
  • Would you consider walking / cycling to work or school? If not, why not?
  • Would a community school run be encouraged in your area?
  • Are recycling facilities in the area working? If not, why not?
  • Any other comments in relation to the environment on the estate.
  • Area conditions
  • Water wastage
  • Electricity wastage
  • Gas wastage
  • Allotment sites
  • Tree planting

Individuals may be asked about the energy saving measures they currently have and will be invited to comment on:

  • What would make them install solar panels either PV or water heating?
  • What are the barriers in installing cavity wall insulation?
  • What are the barriers in installing loft insulation?

Do they think the outlay costs of installing a renewable technology is relative in comparison to both the monetary and climate change savings?

We would like as many people as possible to attend this free event so that they do not miss the opportunity to get helpful and practical advice and learn more about energy saving in the home.
